A maternal fetal medicine specialist, sometimes called a perinatologist or high-risk obstetrician, is considered a sub-specialist within the medical field, earning this designation by undergoing training in obstetrics and gynecology and taking education further to gain expert understanding of pregnancy complications and treatments.
